So, your children need your help preventing tooth decay. Here are a few tips on how:
Start as early as possible. After the age of two, help your child brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. If possible, use dental floss to clean between the teeth before they go to bed.
Avoid eating after cleaning their teeth at bedtime. Salivary flow decreases while they sleep, which makes their teeth more vulnerable to cavities.
Minimize snacking or sipping of drinks between meals. Saliva needs time to neutralize acids and repair the teeth. Keep in mind a low-sugar diet reduces their risks of tooth decay.
Frequently drinking water also reduces the chances of new cavities from forming.
Dental sealants also help protect teeth from cavities. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to act as a shield between teeth and harmful bacteria.
